Shine
Explore Shine’s work at Sharing Is Caring, a group exhibition in partnership with University College London Hospitals Arts & Heritage from 22 November - 5 February. Find out more about the exhibition at The Street Gallery of UCLH.
Shine has two distinct approaches to his work; he enjoys creating abstract or figurative and repetitive medium to large-scale paintings in bright and bold colours.
He has a signature motif - circles - which he uses to form the features of this portrait. The circles draw him close to one of his favourite artists he learned about at Artbox, Yayoi Kusama. The circles are both a beautiful result of his improved fine motor skills, and an ingenious strategy his tutors have used to break down inspiration images into manageable chunks.
Shine's confidence has grown in his time at Artbox. Initially, Shine would work on his own away from the rest of the group but now Shine interacts with everyone in his group, usually admiring and supporting everyone’s work. Regularly interacting with other Artbox artists has pushed Shine to improve his communication and has resulted in more intuitive emotional regulation, making Shine very social and confident.
Although Shine doesn’t place a lot of importance on exhibiting his artwork, he always gets immense amounts of happiness and pride when he frames his artwork and shows it to his mother. His artwork, however, sells quickly and easily given its bright colours and mesmerising patterns, helping create awareness of the talents of people with learning differences and autism.
