Artbox London are proud to present Sharing Is Caring, a group exhibition in partnership with UCLH Arts & Heritage. This exhibition showcases the work of nineteen Artbox artists and is situated in The Street Gallery of University College Hospital.
“Sharing is Caring” straddles two strands of Artbox London's 'theory of change', the actions we're taking to drive positive change and impact. The first focuses on the positive impact art making and engagement has on people with learning disabilities and autism. The second argues for the beneficial effects of art being seen in a variety of environments, including hospitals. Art can be deeply healing and transformative and both beliefs rely on the ability art has to open dialogues with oneself and with others, and the nurturing effect that artistic expression has.
Every artist showcased in this exhibition has a unique perspective and touching story of enjoyment, support, enrichment and development. Some artists have found that artistic practice is their preferred way to socialise, reducing isolation and loneliness, while others use it to process their emotions and delve into different versions of themselves. Many artists have improved their communication and interpersonal skills while also developing their fine motor skills. Some focus on the process of creating, leaning into a meditative workflow, while others find the results of the process (selling and exhibiting their art) to be an encouraging experience. Artists can feel valued when they receive money for their work and exhibiting gives them a sense of recognition, a feeling of being heard and appreciated.
Many of the artists have built further independence and confidence through their work. Celebrating the artists’ talent and sharing their stories with a wider audience brings deserved recognition to our community and also changes attitudes about what the artists can achieve. Each artist and their work contributes to improving the inclusion of people with learning disabilities and autism in the art world and in society in general. This exhibition is about sharing those journeys and sharing the joy and healing that art brings.
