Joshua
Explore Josh’s work at Sharing Is Caring, a group exhibition in partnership with University College London Hospitals Arts & Heritage from 22 November - 5 February. Find out more about the exhibition at The Street Gallery of UCLH.
Josh started out creating detailed drawings of animals using reference images as a starting point. He is now exploring portraiture with more abstract tendencies and painting both from his imagination and from life. Josh has become fluid in a variety of mediums, such as acrylic and oil paint, charcoal, oil pastel and pencil drawing. Through Artbox he’s learned about other artists, being inspired by their styles, and finding new ways of seeing and new levels of depth to add to his works. Frank Auerbach is Josh’s current inspiration and this is evidenced beautifully in his most recent portraits.
Josh has always been introverted but through artmaking he has found a comfortable and engaging way to explore his feelings and thoughts.
“The themes I have explored are dark themes that dont have a lot of light, a dark aspect. I am interested in exploring moodier, contrasting artworks with dark tones that have strong feelings as this interests me more with the artwork alluding to the possible meanings and story behind it. ”

This body of work is an approach to portraiture. The final portraits are called ‘The disrupted person’ and The disrupted person part two'.’
The ‘Disrupted person’ was created using oils and ink, and created from Joshua’s imagination.
‘I was using oils to make an abstract portrait series of dark emotion but also using the technique of making a portrait differently.’
‘The Disrupted person part two’ was created with ink, chalk and charcoal, starting from an abstract base which variation are displayed here, made by using different mark making tools, such as a ink brush on a string. The process can be seen below.
