David 5.1.jpg

David makes large abstract collage works from recycled imagery and artworks.

David creates themes from the imagery he creates in his work, and he builds a narrative as he is working.

This can be seen in his work ‘CAN YOU TRUST WHAT YOU SEE? IS IT A REALITY?’ and in the works surrounding a black and white image of a city ‘Lines, many colours, emotional motions, city and money,’ and in another collage ‘psychology of furrows textures and landscape.’

In this sense David creates the meaning laterally, from the combined elements of his work and what comes to mind as he is making.

David’s collage works are created relatively quickly, usually creating two in a 3 hours session. This highlights the speed of which his ideas are created from the visual elements of his work.

“Because I didn't go to art college, it's not as stupid as it sounds. When I did my art degree at the University of East London, when they did their art they always touched on politics. Growing up my relative political opinions were poles apart and it's ingrained in my memory.” I don't hold art in the past as relevant generally. When I did my degree I didn't do a lot of trips to the national gallery. When I went to the Tate, most of my experience was looking at modern art, not renaissance painting. Most of the [renaissance] paintings were owned by people who owned slaves that is why they could afford to buy the paintings” Which is David's opinion on renaissance art. “The problem with art is we get this romantic image in the west.” Most of them would employ an assistant to do the painting. Some were more honest about it than others.”

“I would like people to show some reaction. I'm not necessarily asking people to agree with my artwork.”

“When i was working at the Southbank Centre whilst studying art I got to see the other side of the canvas, it's not always a pretty picture.”

Artists that inspire me are Barbara Hepworth. She was a single mum. She had a lot of bad press at the time, but men didn’t. Some of the sculptures from pop art like Marcel Duchamp.
