Ideas and steps for drawing and painting flowers

Continuing with our nature theme, here are some more ideas and steps for creating flowers (you can click on the arrows to see more steps

Example 1:

  1. Make 5 dots in the shape of a circle.

  2. Draw a heart shape starting from the dot. This will be your first petal.

  3. Repeat for all 5 dots so you will have 5 heart shapes (petals)

  4. Colour in the hearts.

  5. Add detail to each petal. This can be as simple as drawing the letter ‘V’

Example 2:

  1. Create a small blob using a felt tip pen, marker pen, crayon.

  2. Repeat this 5-6 times to create your flower.

  3. Create several flowers following steps 1 and 2. You can create varying sizes.

  4. Add detail in a different colour.

Example 3:

  1. Create a flower using a light colour.

  2. Create several flowers using the same colour.

  3. Create another layer of flowers using a new colour.

  4. Create a third layer of flowers using a darker colour.

  5. Draw a pot or vase at the bottom and fill with pattern.

Example 4:

  1. Draw your petals/leaves.

  2. Colour the background of the petal/leaf.

  3. Rub out the pencil marks.

  4. Fill in the detail with another colour.

Example 5:

  1. Draw a symmetrical flower (similar on both sides).

  2. Add detail.

  3. Paint using a light shade of your chosen colour (you can add more water to the paint to achieve this).

  4. Using the same colour, add a darker shade at the bottom of each petal (add less water to the paintbrush).

  5. Add detail using a darker shade.

Example 6:

  1. Alternate the colours or shades of colour on each petal or leaf.

As with the previous blog post on creating leaves, there are so many ways you can draw and colour flowers. Take your time, don’t worry about creating a finished piece, just practise, experiment with different styles and colours and fill up the entire paper with your experiments…and keep sending us photos of your creations!
